The inspirations from Western culture, and lately the Korean culture, and a sense of tribal connection in terms of colour combination is what makes the people coming from this region very different and charming than rest of the country. So, it does not come as much of a surprise that fashion designers from North-East region are making rapid strides in putting this region and India on a global map- and ominously nourishing the ethnic style by merging the trending with tribal. Let us have a closer look at five of the best fashion designers from North-East that a country of over a billion people can take great pride in.
With her roots from Hmar tribe and native of Manipur, this talented designer has managed to become a creative director at one of the world’s renowned luxury accessories brand, MAWI. MawiKeivom launched her label at the London Fashion Week 2000 along with her partner husband, Tim Awan. Her brand tasted success with a charm necklace- a tailored jewelry item in which she added vintage baubles and some of her own jewels. The designer prefers ro work on classic materials such as semi-precious stones, crystals and pearls. Over the last many years, MAWI has been invited by some of the most iconic brands like Hugo Boss, Atelier Swarovski, Selfridges and Bruno Magli for collaboration. Her designs have been adorned by some of the top celebrities- from Scarlett Johanssen and Rihanna to DeepikaPadukone.
AtsuSekhose is one of the most renowned names from the North-East to take the fashion world by storm. He celebrated his decade long illustrious career in fashion industry when he came up with his Fall-Winter cocktail collection of 2017. He credits most of his design styles to his origins in Nagaland, absorbing a modern outlook towards tribal patterns, textiles and colours from his native place. He came up with his coveted label in 2007 with a viewpoint comprising of an enthusiastic sense of glamour, unmatched style and modern opulence. He has given a glamorous look to most of the leading ladies of Hindi film industry- Kareena Kapoor, DeepikaPadukone, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra for a plethora of events and red-carpet entrances. Atsu has a loyal clientele that is constantly growing, especially for his evening wear in Europe and the Middle East.
3 Nixon Bui
Born and brought up in Daporijo in the district of Upper Subansiri, Arunachal Pradesh, Nixon Bui is the creative director and founder of a fashion label named NIXONBUI. This one is a modern fashion-culture label in Copenhagen, Denmark. Found in 2014, this brand is very much inspired from tribal communities found in North-East India. The official website clearly states that philosophies of tribal living is the driving force behind NIXONBUI.
4 Stacey Syiem
Basically from Meghalaya, Stacey PongenerSyiem has managed to make a mark in UK with her fashion label Little Hill People with majority of outfits inspired from urban tribal fashion. Her contemporary fashion wear inspired from culture, accessories and apparel personify innovative designs made with the help of traditional beads and weaves of various tribes in North-Eastern India. Merging traditional North-Eastern materials with contemporary styles of London, Little Hill People exemplifies magnificent accessories and grments.
5 Keren Longkumer
With her roots in Nagaland, Keren Longkumer is a footwear designer and a co-founder of LLQ. This brand offers a line of bold footwear in Los Angeles, USA and manufactured in Spain. At a recent event, popular singer Solange Knowles was captured adorning Xavi in her video Cranes in the Sky and LOQ Villa in Don’t Touch My Hair. LOQ is present in 50 stores in countries like France, Hong Kong and New Zealand. She prefers to share her sketches via WhatsApp or Email while working with her designer cum partner Valerie Quant. She is working really hard to amalgamate her designs with North Eastern sensibilities.
